Damage Assessment Teams

Numerous local, state and federal programs exist to help survivors of natural or man-made disasters.  But before any help can be requested, our Damage Assessment Teams must investigate, document and catalog all damages and needs for those affected by the disaster and submit it to the appropriate agency.  These damage assessments are critical for gathering all the information we need so the state can recommend to the Governor a Disaster Declaration and, in turn, forward it to the President for a disaster declaration and federal assistance.

Additionally, our Damage Assessment Teams find and help those survivors in need of emergency shelter, food, water, clothing, medical supplies and any other assistance they need.  We coordinate with the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, state agencies and
faith-based and non-profit agencies to ensure these people receive desperately needed assistance.

Who are the Vermilion County Damage Assessment Teams?  They are local citizens and volunteers just like you.  Volunteers wanting to help their neighbors get the help and assistance they need.  This is not an in-depth, insurance adjuster claims-type assessment that takes weeks or months of training and experience.  It only takes a couple of hours of training and you’re ready to go!  As soon as the firemen, EMTs and police have done their jobs, you are next in line to get these disaster survivors help.

Thankfully disasters are fairly rare. But when they do occur, we need volunteers, like you, trained and ready to respond to help their neighbors.  Won’t you consider volunteering as a Damage Assessment Team member today?  Just complete the application and click “Submit”.  It’s that easy!  We look forward to hearing from you.”

Warning and protecting the public ahead of disasters and emergencies such as tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, blizzards and such are only one step in the responsibilities of Vermilion County Emergency Management.  After the storm has passed and emergency responders have come in and helped everyone who needed evacuation or medical assistance, the next step is for the Vermilion County Emergency Management Damage Assessment Teams to come in and document the damages anyone has suffered from the disaster and help get them food and water, shelter and other basic needs.
